Travel

For a bit of advance planning, we’ve plotted the venues, accommodation and some of the Fringe / related venues onto this Google Map.

Derby is centrally located in the UK – not particularly handy for making sandcastles on the beach, but absolutely perfect for getting to from any part of the country, whatever your mode of transport:

BY CAR

Exit M1 at J25, take the A52 towards Derby and follow signs to the City Centre / Assembly Rooms. The nearest car park is the multi-storey “Assembly Rooms” car park, adjacent to the Market Place, but this does become full very quickly, other car parks nearby include Chapel Street or Parksafe on Bold Lane, or alternatively there is attended parking just a few minutes walk away – call Patrick on 07985 655531 for information and to reserve a space.

GO CAR SHARE

If you are driving to Derby Folk Festival, please come with a full car. If you can’t fill it with old friends, please fill it with new ones. Use our pals at GoCarShare to find travel buddies, save money, fuel and the planet (as well as sharing the enjoyment of the journey!)

BY TRAIN

Derby’s Railway Station is located just outside the city centre, with 31 fast daily services to London St Pancras, a journey that takes less than two hours. Direct rail services connect Derby with Birmingham, Bournemouth, Bristol, Cardiff, Dundee, Edinburgh, Leeds, Leicester, Newcastle, Nottingham, Oxford, Sheffield, Southampton, Plymouth and many other destinations.

Derby Train Station is just over one mile away from The Cathedral Quarter, so it is a quick taxi journey or a 15-minute walk following the signposts to City Centre.

BY AIR

East Midlands Airport is approximately 20 minutes drive from The Cathedral Quarter (which is the city centre where all the venues are) and Birmingham International Airport is about a 45 minute drive, providing extensive air links to most European and worldwide destinations.

BY FOOT

Derby is a compact city and The Cathedral Quarter is the city centre with the Market Place and all venues within easy walking distance from the main shopping areas, hotels, restaurants, bars and other amenities.

BY BIKE

Derby is a fab city for cycling, thanks in no small part to the great work of Cycle Derby, and the support of Sustrans. The Market Place hub is on National Cycle Network Route 6, and close to Routes 54 and 68. You can find a city cycle map on the Connected Derby website – here.

BY BUS

Derby LIVE and its venues are on all major bus routes into the city. Contact Travel line on
